When All Hell Breaks Loose From the Ashes of Dresden to Existential Grace eBook Manfred Bahmann Reviews
Manfred Bahmann offers more than an autobiography; he includes a summary of Lutheran theology and insights into Liberation Theology and post-Vatican II ecumenism. His autobiography contains an ample amoutnof interest. He survived the fire bombing of Dresden in the final months of World War II and was in Manhattan on 9/11. He writes with passion, candor, and insight about a career that took him to three continents. Readers will enjoy this fascinating journey and gopefully read more about the many topics he covers.
Manfred Bahmann has lived in the midst of chaos and yet has managed to find the still center of faith. From surviving the fire bombing of Dresden to participating in the rise of liberation theology in Latin America to ministering to alienated youth n divided Berlin, his story makes for compelling reading. But this is not just a memoir. It is an account of the author's discovery of the sure presence of God even when the very gates of Hell seem to be opening. Those asking where God is in times of conflict or radical change will profit from accompanying Bahmann as he wrestles with that question.
Very detailed and very informative, like you were there.
Good honest read!
Manfred is a personal friend of mine of many, many years. I don't necessarily agree with all of his political views, but his theology is sound. The book itself is a detailed summary of a journey of a growth in faith and the manifestation of the actions he took as a result.
I knew Manfred and Marianne Bahmann at Stanford in the 1980s, and I had heard him tell many parts of his life's journey. I am so happy that he has written it down for posterity. It is an amazing voyage of strength and faith that can speak to many people. It is a book that drips with Manfred's wonderful humanity.
A friend of mine is about to be ordained as an Episcopal priest, and I can not think of a more appropriate gift for him.
I am also preparing an honors seminar in 20th-century civilization for next semester, and I will be using some large portions of Manfred's narratives in this class.
A vividly written personal story that draws the reader into the chaotic world of Germany as WWII loams large and the youth of that time are pulled in to the spiral that eventually leads to destruction of a people and a nation. Amidst that turmoil a young German boy, a member of the Nazi youth, is thrust into the chaos after the bombing of his home in Dresden. His life takes many twits and turns but thought it all he finds meaning in his love of theology and finally through a young woman who e=becomes his wife. The end result is his understanding that God himself was in the midst of it all and that truly grace does abound. Rev. Dr. Bahmann's use of scripture throughout is well placed and gives important insight into his life's journey as it was shaped like the clay we all are, with the 'Potter" God the Creator molding him for a life of service to others. Well worth the reading more than once and worth using as a book for discussion concerning grace in all our lives.
